I believe in love. Love is a fundamental human right, and everyone should have the freedom to marry the person they love, regardless of gender. it's painful to see that even in today's world, where acceptance and love are celebrated globally, some priests in our country still refuse to marry same-sex couples.
It's unfair and discriminatory that the values of an individual priest can impede the happiness of two people who want to spend their lives together. The refusal to perform same-sex marriages isn't just about one couple or one church, it sends a broader message that LGBTQ+ individuals are somehow less worthy of the institution of marriage. This is not acceptable in a society that prides itself on equality and inclusivity.
According to statistics from the Swedish Church, despite the legal recognition of same-sex marriages since 2009, a percentage of priests continue to deny this right to couples. These refusals are anomalies in what should be a unified effort for equality in Sweden. Sweden ranks as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries globally, yet this discrepancy tarnishes our reputation and disrespects the rights of countless individuals.
We demand that all priests in Sweden be required to perform marriages without discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation. The Swedish Church is a powerful institution capable of leading by example.
